Many professionals are turning to freelance work because they want more flexibility and control over their careers. They are tired of being chained to a job they don’t enjoy, and want to have more time for family, friends, hobbies, or personal development.
The Gig Economy has given rise to a new generation of entrepreneurs who value freedom and autonomy over the security and benefits that come with traditional jobs. This is especially true for millennials who are entering the workforce. In a recent episode of the podcast “Work Unlocked,” freelancer Latasha James discussed how she turned to freelance work to have more time for her family, and to do more creative projects that align with her values.
Those who choose to go the freelance route often have more control over their schedule and can pick and choose the clients they work with. They can also set their own rates and increase them as they gain experience. Freelancers can also take on as much or as little work as they want, whether that’s full-time all year round or part-time in the summer months.
Another benefit of freelancing is the ability to build up a diverse portfolio of clients. This helps to reduce the risk of burnout or losing a primary source of income. It also allows freelancers to work with a wide variety of industries, companies, and people, exposing them to new perspectives and experiences.
One of the biggest drawbacks to freelance work, however, is the lack of job security and stability. When a project ends or a client cancels, it can be stressful to find a replacement. In addition, freelancers typically do not receive benefits such as health insurance or 401k contributions.
To avoid these problems, it’s important for freelancers to create a plan and set goals to help them achieve their desired outcome. This could include establishing a savings account and creating a budget for when times are tough. It’s also helpful to find a community of other freelancers who can offer support and advice.
Unlocking your potential means taking a step back and examining who you are now and what kind of person you want to be in the future. This process can be difficult, but it’s worth the effort in order to live your life to its fullest. To start, think about your goals and what is most important to you. Make a list of what you want to accomplish, then turn those into “musts” – the things that you must do in order to feel accomplished.
The final piece of the puzzle is finding a way to balance all of these priorities. That’s where a well-established work-life balance comes in, and many people find it easier to manage their lives when they have more freedom and control over their work. So, before you decide if freelancing is right for you, take some time to consider all of the pros and cons.
